The history of Institute of Pedagogy is an integral part of the history of the University of Szczecin, established in 1985 – but it starts much earlier, i.e. in 1958, when the Adam Mickiewicz University Consultation Centre in Poznan was opened in Szczecin. It became the basis for the establishment of the Higher Teacher Education School – the first humanities university in Szczecin.

In addition to the training of pre-school and early childhood education teachers, special and re-socialisation pedagogues, social workers and cultural animators, the staff of the Institute of Pedagogy carry out multi-faceted research, enriching the teaching heritage.

Horizons of Anthropocene. Community Change Labs

The group’s research work focuses on discovering and changing (action research) the conditions for shaping the critical consciousness of people of different ages and backgrounds regarding the specificity and consequences of changes in the living environment in the current period of anthropocene – an era in the history of the planet in which man has a decisive influence on the state, dynamics and future of the Earth.

In the field of research interest and social impact in particular groups of inhabitants of the Szczecin metropolis there is arousing of thought and broadening the experience of reacting to negative and positive behaviours towards manifestations and consequences of phenomena caused by human activities transforming the natural environment.

For this purpose, problem labs are created that focus on selected groups of phenomena. Their activities are aimed at various groups and environments, with particular emphasis on formal, non-formal and informal education.

Pedeutology and Pedagogical Aretology Research Group

The objective of the research is to shape a positive orientation in pedeutology as a science of the strengths of the teaching profession. Continuing the traditional research on the teacher-educator, the preference is for the arethological dimension of his morality. The research concerns the high quality of the teacher’s being, which is based on the joy of performing everyday professional tasks using one’s virtues as the wealth of this being. Consequential value refers to the feeling of happiness of the pupil-educated. Such research issues require an interdisciplinary approach, taking into account, among others, philosophical, psychological and sociological premises.

    Pedagogy of Things Research Group

The research focuses on questions about the role of things in educational processes and their contexts. On the one hand, the problems undertaken are of a philosophical nature and concern the relations between educational entities and non-human factors. In this context, we ask, among other things, about the possibility of a (post) pedagogical humanism that would take into account non-human actors and their cause. On the other hand, it is important for us to reflect on the possibility of using the perspectives present in humanities in general, and in pedagogy in particular, to study the meaning/activity/place of materiality in pedagogical processes.
