    Extremely moved and with great sadness, we inform that prof. dr hab. Andrzej Witkowski passed away on 17 September 2023. We say goodbye to an outstanding Scientist, an authority in the field of paleoceanology, a valued Academic Teacher, and former Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation.

    Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Witkowski started working at the University of Szczecin in 1996, and in 2001 received the academic title of professor of Earth sciences. Over the years of his career, he has held many honorable positions, including: Vice-Rector for science and international cooperation in 2005-2008 and 2008-2012, and member of the University Council of the University of Szczecin for the 2021-2024 term.
    The professor’s scientific achievements include hundreds of publications, monographs and articles. Prof. Witkowski participated in many scientific expeditions, including to the east coast of South Africa, Namibia, and the Galapagos Islands. Extremely appreciated and liked by his PhD students and students and colleagues for their extensive knowledge and cordial disposition.

    In 2021, Professor Witkowski became a Full Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of two of its committees: the Sea Research Committee and the Geological Sciences Committee at the Faculty III of Exact and Earth Sciences, and also sat on the Scientific Council of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Multiple winner of prestigious scientific awards, including the West Pomeranian Nobel Prize. His committed and diverse professional activities have been noticed and honored with many awards, including: Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and Silver Cross of Merit.

    He will remain in our memory as a man of great culture, kind and noble and respected by the academic and scientific community. We express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones.
