The year of 1985 was a breakthrough for Szczecin – it was then that the University of Szczecin began its operations, fulfilling the dream of establishing a strong academic centre in north-western Poland. The university was only taking its first steps, but from the very beginning it attracted attention with its ambitious development plans and openness to international cooperation.
Just one month after its commencement, on 5 November 1985, the University of Szczecin signed its first cooperation agreement with an international partner – the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald, Germany. This was a significant step that initiated long-term academic relations between the University of Szczecin and foreign research centres and created the foundation for the University’s future activities in the field of internationalisation.
International cooperation has always been one of the key pillars of the University of Szczecin’s activities, enabling the exchange of experience, knowledge and joint implementation of scientific projects. Although the University of Szczecin was a new university at the time, it was already operating on the international arena, creating its position on the educational map of Europe.
Today, four decades later, the University of Szczecin proudly continues this tradition. The university currently has 588 valid agreements under the Erasmus+ program and 85 bilateral agreements that allow for scientific, cultural and social exchange with universities from all over the world.
The photo of the signing of the agreement comes from the collection of Jerzy Giedrys, Resources of the Archives of the University of Szczecin.
