On 27 June this year, the University of Szczecin’s auditorium at Krakowska St hosted the fifth Ceremony of Graduation, which is one of the most important events in the academic calendar. The ceremony is a symbolic farewell of students to the University, its authorities and lecturers. During the ceremony, 181 graduates received their Graduation Cards and were recognized by the rector’s and dean’s authorities for their outstanding scientific, organizational, sports and artistic achievements gained during their studies.
Gaudeamus igitur, Iuvenes dum sumus…
After the student song Gaudeamus Igitur had resounded, the Rector of the University of Szczecin, prof. Waldemar Tarczyński, addressed words of thanks and congratulations to the students and their families:
We thank you for choosing the University of Szczecin and for undertaking the effort of studying. It was not always easy, but you succeeded, as evidenced by your presence here in this room. You overcame all adversities, independently, and also with the help of your loved ones, who can be proud of you today. You have achieved a goal, thanks to which you will forever be members of the academic community of the University of Szczecin. The knowledge gained at this University is something that no one can take away from you. You can work in different professions, but what you have learned is yours forever. You have earned it with very hard work, and we congratulate you on that with all our hearts.
Oliwier Aleksander Urbanek, a biology graduate and Representative of the Student Government Council of the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, spoke on behalf of the graduates:
Each of us has walked our own path, through textbooks, lecture halls, laboratories, workshops, but the common denominator was effort, consistency and people who supported us along the way. That is why I would like to thank, on behalf of myself and the graduates, everyone who accompanied us on this path. The University authorities for creating conditions for us to learn, develop and act. The lecturers for their patience and for being able to arouse curiosity in us, instill passion. The administration for their kindness and calmness, even in the most complicated situations. Our loved ones for their unwavering support and understanding. And each other, for friendships, sharing notes, for coffees before exams, and above all for community.
Graduation and birettas
The culminating moment of the ceremony was the granting of absolution with the rector’s sceptre and the presentation of a tube with a letter of congratulations by the rector’s and dean’s authorities. After this solemn moment, students joyfully threw the tassel of the biretta as a sign that they had gone from students to graduates.
Then, prof. Renata Podgórzańska – Vice-Rector for Education at the University of Szczecin took the floor, and on behalf of dr hab. Katarzyna Kotarska, prof. US – Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, said goodbye to the graduates with the following words:
Do not be afraid of change. Change is not anxiety – it is potential. Every end is a beginning. Every ending – an opportunity. And you, who are just finishing your first, second and uniform master’s studies, are prepared to make the most of this opportunity. At this point, I would also like to thank those without whom your successes would be much more difficult – your families, loved ones, friends. Their support, patience and presence made it possible for you to develop fully at this university. I would also like to thank all academic teachers and administrative staff – for their reliability, conscientiousness and openness. Without your dedication, today’s ceremony would not be possible.
Then, at the words – You have graduated!, the graduates joyfully threw their mortarboards in the air, to signify the end of the education process. The moment was completed by the broadcast of the third film with the graduates, in which they revealed their TOP 3 memories from college. College is not just about exams, credits and sleepless nights – it is also about moments that stay with us forever.
A pleasant accent ending the ceremony was the song Gaude Mater Polonia performed by the University of Szczecin Choir conducted by dr hab. Anna Tarnowska, prof. AS. The wonderful atmosphere and artistic setting provided everyone with an unforgettable experience.
