On 16 November 2025, during a formal gala, the winners of the scientific competition entitled “West Pomeranian Nobel Prizes” were announced. We are pleased to inform you that among the winners were scientists from the University of Szczecin: dr Aleksandra Grzemska from the Institute of Literature and New Media and dr hab. Paweł Terefenko, prof. US from the Institute of Marine and Environmental Sciences.
West Pomeranian Nobel Prizes is a prestigious award granted to scientists since 2001 in eight scientific disciplines: humanities, medicine, economics, basic sciences, technical sciences, agricultural sciences, marine sciences, and, since 2008, arts. The winners were selected by the Jury of the West Pomeranian Science Leaders Club, composed of: Prof. Wojciech Kacalak, Prof. Jan Lubiński, Prof. Antoni Morawski, Prof. Waldemar Tarczyński, and Prof. Aleksander Wolszczan. The aim of the competition is to select the most important scientific achievements made by scientists from the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The basic criterion in the competition is publications in journals from the so-called Philadelphia list.
The winners of the competition were:
in the field of humanities – dr Aleksandra Grzemska
Dr Aleksandra Grzemska is an assistant professor at the Institute of Literature and New Media at the University of Szczecin, a doctor of humanities in the field of literary studies, a literary critic, and an editor. She also serves as secretary of the academic journal Autobiografia. Literatura. Kultura. Media” (Autobiography. Literature. Culture. Media). She is a scholarship holder of the Minister of Science and Higher Education (2025) and winner of the Best Young Scientist of the University of Szczecin 2025 award. In 2024, Dr. Grzemska published a monograph entitled Family and Artistic Relations in Polish Women’s Autobiographical Literature (Routledge 2024, 300 points from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education). In this monograph, the author analyzes autobiographical narratives by women published in Poland after 2000, interpreting them in a broad cultural perspective. The study focuses on categories and issues resulting from the influence of family and artistic relationships, considered in the context of social policy. The publication not only reveals the literary strategies used by female authors, but also shows their efforts to shape independent subjectivity, search for new forms of commemoration, and understand the impact of socio-political processes on the development of autobiographical literature.
in the field of marine sciences – dr hab. Paweł Terefenko, prof. US
Dr hab. Paweł Terefenko, prof. US, conducts research on natural hazards in coastal and inland areas, focusing on coastal erosion processes and the effects of flooding in Europe. In his work, he combines a local approach, directed at a detailed analysis of the dynamics of the southern Baltic coast, with a broad European perspective on long-term trends and the attribution of flood losses. In his publications, he analyzes the dynamics of the southern Baltic coast with a broad perspective on long-term trends and the parameterization of flood losses in European areas. In his research on coastal erosion processes, he used advanced remote sensing methods, including laser scanning, which allowed for precise capture of morphological changes. The results of the analyses revealed complex relationships between extreme weather events, such as storms and heavy rainfall, and changes in cliffs and beach areas. Professor Paweł Terefenko is one of the world’s leading researchers on the effects of flooding. He is the co-creator and co-implementer of the HANZE database, which covers over 150 years of flood history on the European continent. It includes an extensive catalog of flood events from 1950 to 2020, integrating hydrological modeling with historical records and statistical data.
In the evening, after the results of the competition were announced, a gala ceremony was held at the Pomeranian Provincial Palace of the Academy of Art in Szczecin.
We sincerely congratulate the winners of this prestigious award and wish them further scientific success, inspiring discoveries, and continued satisfaction from their research activities.
