On 17 November 2025, during a meeting at the University of Greifswald, twelve universities signed a joint declaration establishing a network of universities in the Polish-German border region. The Pomeranian universities alliance will promote the region’s sustainable development and strengthen exchanges between researchers and students from universities in both countries.

On behalf of the University of Szczecin, the meeting was attended by: dr hab. Kinga Flaga-Gieruszyńska, prof. US – Vice-Rector for Organization; dr hab. Maciej Kowalewski, prof. US – Head of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Social Development; dr Joanna Misiukajtis – Head of the International Relations Department; and dr Norbert Obrycki – Rector’s Plenipotentiary for Territorial Cooperation at the University of Szczecin.

The first steps towards this network were undertaken in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair at the University of Szczecin in 2024 – the same year that the first meeting of rectors of some border universities took place. Working meetings dedicated to the social dimension of sustainable development were organized in 2024 and 2025 (in Szczecin, Neubrandenburg, and Kulice).

The process of strengthening cooperation between universities operating in the same region, initiated at the University of Szczecin, is entering its next phase. The universities announced that in the coming years they plan to develop new research programs, mobility projects, and activities promoting interregional dialogue, thus responding to the needs of a changing Europe and border regions.
