    The Insititute of History in cooperation with Książnica Pomorska, the Center for Geopolics of the University of Cambridge and the NATO Multinational Corps Northeast Command in Szczecin organize a public panel discussion: New security challenges in the Baltic Sea Region in the context of the war in Ukraine. The panel discussion will take place on 21 June 2024, at 4 pm in the Zbigniew Herbert Hall at Książnica Pomorska.

    The aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which entered a new phase on February 24, 2022 and turned into a full-scale war, has caused far-reaching changes in the balance of power in Europe, especially in the Baltic zone. In the face of the growing risk from Russia, previously neutral countries, such as Finland and Sweden, decided to join the group of NATO member states. Sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, repeated violations of the air zone of EU countries by Russian fighters, increasing jamming of the GPS signal in the southern Baltic area, the source of which indicates Russia’s intervention, as in the case of other forms of provocation against the background of extensive military exercises on both sides of the newly the emerging dividing line between Eastern and Western Europe – all these events and others point to new challenges for the security policy of both NATO and the European Union in the face of the current dynamics of global changes in international relations.

    The discussion – in English with simultaneous translation into Polish – will be attended by:
    prof. Brendan Simms, director of the Center for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge;
    Rt Hon Charles Clarke, former British Home Secretary (2004-2006);
    Col. Maciej Zaborowski, assistant chief of staff for policy, planning and assessment at the NATO Multinational Northeastern Corps in Szczecin;
    and prof. Jörg Hackmann, the Institute of History of the University of Szczecin.
    The discussion will be moderated by prof. Pierre-Frédéric Weber, deputy director of the Institute of History of the University of Szczecin.
