In November 1998, as a result of the division of the Institute of Philosophy and Politics into two separate units, the Institute of Philosophy was established at the University of Szczecin. The first director of the Institute was Prof. Wacław Mejbaum. From February 2003 to September 2016, the Institute was headed by Professor Tadeusz Szubka. Since October 2016, Assoc. Prof. Maciej Witek. In 2019, the Institute changed its name to Institute of Philosophy and Cognitive Science, which reflects its current research and didactic profile.
The Institute conducts scientific research in the discipline of philosophy within its following sub-disciplines: epistemology, ethics, philosophy of language, philosophy of culture, philosophy of the mind, history of philosophy, logics, metaphilosophy and ontology.
In addition, our Institute conducts scientific research in the field of cognitive science: comparative cognitive science, philosophy of cognitive science, modelling of arithmetic competence and other cognitive skills, cognitive science of communication and pragmatics
